Increased reliability with control system upgrades

Most generator sets installed as backup power have very few operating hours, even if the generator itself is old. If the engine and generator are properly maintained, they likely have many years of life left, but the control equipment may feel outdated, and spare parts can be hard to find.

By installing a new control system, you can extend the equipment's lifespan by about 10–20 years, instead of investing in an entirely new backup power system. You also typically get a control system that offers more features, better performance, and communication with superior control systems that didn’t exist when the plant was originally commissioned," says Per Lundgren, Head of Sales and Service at Elektromatik.

Upgrading a backup power solution is a major investment, especially when most of the equipment still functions well. That's why there is often demand for a control system upgrade, which extends the lifespan of the entire backup power solution.

"It's really about extending the life of functioning equipment and minimizing the investments needed to maintain a reliable system. You enhance your existing equipment in a cost-effective way, while also gaining more functionality and better technology," says Per Lundgren.

Elektromatik offers both standardized and customized solutions as alternatives for upgrading control equipment, and the staff specializes in many of today’s common systems.

"We see a growing demand from our customers for control system replacements, and as of January 1, 2024, we have established a dedicated department focused on this," says Per Lundgren.

The investment is approximately one-tenth of the cost of a completely new system. In other words, the lifespan of the plant is extended by 10–20 years at a cost that’s a fraction of what it would be to replace the entire backup power system. Additionally, there’s an environmental benefit since not all equipment needs to be replaced. Most importantly, the investment increases system reliability and availability. Along with control system replacements, a major service is performed to ensure the investment is justified.

Older control systems can pose risks and cause concerns about whether everything will function correctly. With a new control system, you secure the equipment, providing greater peace of mind for the operation. You gain better monitoring, but more importantly, you get new, fresh, and fully functional equipment," concludes Per Lundgren.
